NextEar converts sound into a sense of touch using a set of actuators distributed on a belt worn by the user.  Click Here for more info.

NextEar may help improve articulation through the direct sound feedback via touch it provides the user in real-time.

Additionally, the added sensing ability it gives the user may afford further benefits related to differentiating and identifying sounds found in the vicinity of the user.

Note:  Currently, as NextEar is in development, there is no clinical data or use cases to support any definitive improvement in any use case or purpose.

NextEar is aimed at helping people who are profoundly deaf and/or deafblind through sensory substitution, where NextEar attempts to utilize the sense of touch to replace the sense of hearing.   As such, it may require neuroplasticity to allow for this accommodation, and generally, a younger person may have better success with this.

Additionally, deaf and hearing-related schools may benefit from having NextEar as a tool to support areas associated with improving articulation, etc.  It affords another way for the deaf to gain a better understanding of sound.

Currently, NextEar uses an external power supply plugged into a standard wall outlet.  We hope to add a battery-powered option for increased mobility in the future.

NextEar has a microphone tethered to it which may be clipped elsewhere on clothing for optimum sound gathering.

NextEar is relatively light weight - generally not a cause for concern for most situations.

NextEar automatically powers up and immediately starts converting sound to touch without any user intervention.
